Getting a Driver's License
A driver's license opens doors to jobs, freedom, and independence. Follow these steps even if you've had it suspended before.

Get a copy of your birth certificate
You need your birth certificate to get a license. Order a certified copy online if you don't have one.
Get your Social Security card (or replacement)
Required for a REAL ID. Replace yours for free through SSA if it's lost or damaged.
Gather proof of address (2 documents needed)
Examples: utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement, government mail — must show your name and current address.
Check if your license is suspended — and resolve it
Look up your driving record to see if you have any suspensions or holds that must be cleared first.
Pay any outstanding fines or tickets
Unpaid tickets can block your license. Ask about payment plans or fee waivers if you can't pay in full.
Study for the written knowledge test
Get your state's driver handbook and use free practice tests online. Most people pass after a few days of studying.
Schedule and pass your written test at the DMV
Schedule online or walk in. Bring all your documents. The test is multiple choice — you've got this.
Practice driving and pass your road test
Practice with a licensed driver before taking your road test. Ask about community driving programs if you need a car.
