Step 1

Assess immediate safety β€” are you or your family in danger?

If there is domestic violence, abuse, or immediate danger β€” call 911 or the DV hotline NOW.

Step 2

Find emergency family shelter

DV shelters, family shelters, and transitional housing programs can house you and your children together.

Step 3

Apply for emergency benefits for your family

Apply for CalWORKs/TANF (cash aid), SNAP (food), Medi-Cal/Medicaid, and WIC if you have young children.

Step 4

Enroll children in school

The McKinney-Vento Act ensures homeless children can enroll in school immediately, even without documents.

Step 5

Get legal protection β€” restraining order or protective order

If your family is unsafe due to an abuser, get a protective order. Free legal aid can help.

Step 6

Access trauma counseling for you and your children

Children who witness abuse or instability need support. Many nonprofits offer free family counseling.

Step 7

Connect with a family case manager

A case manager coordinates multiple services β€” housing, benefits, legal, childcare β€” all in one place.
