Dealing with Legal Issues

The legal system is overwhelming β€” but you can navigate it. Knowledge and consistency are your greatest tools.

Step 1

Make a list of all your current legal issues

Write down every case, charge, and court date you know about. Being organized is critical when dealing with the legal system.

Step 2

Find free or low-cost legal aid in your area

Legal aid organizations provide free legal help to people who can't afford an attorney.

Step 3

Look up your court cases online

Most states have online court portals where you can look up your cases, hearing dates, and case status.

Step 4

Show up to every court date β€” never miss a hearing

Missing a court date results in a warrant and more charges. Set multiple phone alarms for every hearing.

Step 5

Ask about public defenders if you cannot afford an attorney

You have the right to a public defender for criminal cases. Request one at your first court appearance.

Step 6

Ask about diversion programs, drug courts, or plea deals

Many jurisdictions have programs that divert people to treatment instead of incarceration. Ask your attorney or the court.

Step 7

Complete all court-ordered programs (classes, community service, etc.)

Non-compliance leads to violations and possible incarceration. Complete requirements early if possible.

Step 8

Once resolved, look into expungement

After completing sentences, you may be able to clear your record. See the Expungement guide.
