Medicaid is free health insurance for low-income adults. Most people in recovery qualify. Apply online, by phone, or in person.

Apply for Medicaid / Medi-Cal

Apply online at your state's benefits portal. In California, use BenefitsCal. You can also apply by phone or at a local county office.

Get your Medicaid/insurance card and member ID

Once approved, you'll receive a card in the mail. Keep it safe — you'll need it for all appointments.

Find a primary care doctor that accepts your insurance

Use your plan's provider directory to find a doctor near you. Community health centers accept Medicaid and often see people at low or no cost.

Schedule your first appointment

Call and tell them you're a new patient with Medicaid. Ask what to bring — usually your ID and insurance card.

Get any needed prescriptions filled

Medicaid covers most essential medications. Use GoodRx or pharmacy discount programs if there are gaps.

Establish dental and vision care

Many Medicaid plans include dental and vision. Ask your plan what's covered and find local providers.
