How to Give Back & Pay It Forward

You've been through hard things β€” and that makes you uniquely qualified to help others. Here's how to turn your story into someone else's breakthrough.

Your Progress0 / 10 steps

Step 1

Share your story with someone who is where you used to be

Your testimony is powerful. One honest conversation can save a life. Don't be ashamed β€” be a light. Reach out to shelters, recovery centers, or churches to share.

Step 2

Become a peer recovery coach or mentor

Lived experience is one of the most powerful qualifications. Get certified as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) and get paid to help others.

Step 3

Volunteer at a local shelter or food bank

Even a few hours a week makes a huge difference β€” and it helps you heal too. Showing up for others builds purpose.

Step 4

Sponsor someone in recovery

If you're working a 12-step program, consider sponsoring someone new. Walking someone through the steps is one of the most healing things you can do.

Step 5

Donate items you no longer need

Clothes, furniture, toiletries, and household items can change someone's life. Donate to local shelters, thrift stores, or community drives.

Step 6

Help someone get their ID or benefits

Navigate paperwork and systems with someone who doesn't know how. Offer to drive someone to the DMV, help fill out a SNAP application, or call 211 together.

Step 7

Give a job opportunity or referral

If you have a job or know an employer, refer someone in recovery. A simple vouch can open a door that changes everything.

Step 8

Pray for others and check in regularly

Text, call, or show up. Consistency is what people in crisis need most. Be the person who doesn't give up on them.

Step 9

Start or join a community support group

Host a small group, Bible study, or recovery circle in your home, church, or community center.

Step 10

Advocate for policy change in your community

Attend city council meetings, support re-entry legislation, and use your voice to change systems that held you down β€” so the next person has it easier.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." β€” Philippians 4:13
