Step 1

Call SAMHSA's free helpline right now

SAMHSA's National Helpline is free, confidential, and available 24/7. They will connect you with local treatment options β€” no insurance needed.

Step 2

Search for treatment programs near you

Use the SAMHSA treatment locator to find inpatient, outpatient, and detox programs in your area.

Step 3

Understand the difference: Inpatient vs Outpatient

Inpatient = live-in treatment (most intensive). Outpatient = attend sessions while living at home. Choose based on your situation and support system.

Step 4

Apply for Medicaid / Medi-Cal to cover treatment costs

Medicaid covers most addiction treatment. Apply now β€” approval can be very fast.

Step 5

Contact your chosen facility and complete intake paperwork

Call the facility, ask about availability, insurance accepted, and what to bring. Complete all intake forms.

Step 6

Arrange transportation to the facility

Many programs offer transportation assistance. Also check with 211 for rides.

Step 7

Ask about MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) if applicable

Medications like Suboxone, Methadone, or Vivitrol can help with withdrawal and cravings safely.

Step 8

Apply for Medi-Cal / Medical coverage

If you don't have insurance, apply for Medi-Cal (California) or Medicaid immediately β€” it can cover the full cost of rehab with little to no out-of-pocket expense.

Step 9

Take the ASAM assessment to determine level of care

The ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) criteria assessment is used by treatment providers to determine the right level of care for you β€” detox, inpatient, or outpatient.

Step 10

Complete treatment and build an aftercare plan

Before leaving, work with your counselor on a solid aftercare plan: sober living, support groups, outpatient follow-up.
